Bharat Rao is a Research Professor in the Department of Technology Management and Innovation at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, where he previously served as the Department Chair. He holds a Ph.D. in Marketing and Strategic Management from the University of Georgia and was a post-doc in the Technology and Operations Management Unit at Harvard Business School.
His research centers on how emerging technologies diffuse through industries and economies, with a current focus on the socio-economic impacts of AI, disruptive innovation, and innovation ecosystems. That work has appeared in Communications of the ACM, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, and Technology in Society, among other outlets, and he is the author of Defense Technological Innovation: Issues and Challenges in an Era of Converging Technologies. He has taught in executive and graduate programs at Harvard Business School, INSEAD, NYU, and Tufts, and has advised on technology strategy for organizations ranging from the U.S. Department of Defense's DEVCOM to the Office of the Mayor of New York City.
Most recently he authored Intelligence Capitalism: Close Encounters with Cognitive Abundance. The Intelligence Capitalism Career Diagnostic draws directly on this research, applying over two decades of work on how technology actually diffuses through industries to the specific question of how AI is diffusing through one person's job.
